President Barack Obama was the eighth U.S. president to officially acknowledge UMGC's history of service to adult learners including members of the U.S. military around the world. View letters from the seven other U.S. presidents.

University of Maryland Global Campus celebrated its 70th anniversary throughout 2017. Unique among institutions of higher education, UMGC was established in 1947 to meet the educational needs of adult students and the U.S. military. A pioneer in distance education, UMGC has always looked for new and better ways to serve students. Today UMGC has grown to be the largest public online university in the nation, serving students around the world. Discover our history, including milestones in our timeline and how we got our name.

We are proud to share the following proclamation and resolutions commemorating our 70 years in higher education.


A proclamation honoring UMGC on its 70th anniversary was signed by Maryland Governor Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. on May 13, 2017—the same day that Lieutenant Governor Boyd K. Rutherford delivered a commencement address to the graduating class of 2017.

Whereas, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was founded in 1947 to serve the higher education needs of adult learners outside of the College Park campus, many of whom were veterans returning from World War II; and

Whereas, In 1949, UMUC became the first institution of higher education in America to send faculty overseas to teach college courses to active-duty servicemembers; and

Whereas, UMUC is Maryland's open university, serving working adults, military servicemen and servicewomen and their families, and veterans who reside in Maryland, across the United States, and around the world; and

Whereas, UMUC is today a world leader in innovative educational models, with award-winning online programs in disciplines including biotechnology, cybersecurity, data analytics, and information technology that are in high demand in the increasingly technical, global workplace; and

Whereas, UMUC faculty comprise scholar-practitioners who have distinguished themselves in their fields as well as in the classroom; and

Whereas, Over the past 70 years, UMUC has made the dream of a degree a reality for more than 206,000 graduates;

Now, Therefore, I, Lawrence J. Hogan Jr., Governor of the State of Maryland, do hereby proclaim May 13, 2017, as a special day to honor the University of Maryland University College 70th Anniversary Celebration in Maryland, and do commend this observance to all our our citizens.

President Javier Miyares accepts resolutions on behalf of UMUC

On March 27, 2017, UMGC was honored by the Maryland legislature with resolutions recognizing the institution's 70th anniversary. President Javier Miyares attended ceremonies in both chambers to accept the resolutions on behalf of the university.
