Communication Studies Minor

A minor in communication studies requires the completion of 15 credits of coursework. All COMM, JOUR, SPCH, and WRTG courses apply.

Computer Science Minor

A minor in computer science includes the completion of 15 credits of coursework, including the following two-course sequence in programming:

  • CMIS 141

The remaining 9 credits may be chosen from any upper-level CMSC courses (courses numbered 300 or above).

Criminal Justice Minor

A minor in criminal justice requires the completion of 15 credits of coursework. All CCJS courses apply. It is recommended that you take CCJS 100 or CCJS 105 as the first course in the major (if you have not already applied the course toward other degree requirements).

Cybersecurity Minor

A minor in cybersecurity requires the completion of 15 credits of coursework. All CSIA and CMIT courses apply.

As a personal financial planning minor, you will already have taken five of the six courses required to complete the Certified Financial Planner Board-approved course of study that will qualify you for the CFP exam. But you do not have to currently be enrolled at UMUC to take these classes. The CFP Board-approved course of study is available to any individual that is interested in earning the CFP certification.

Requirements for All Minors

  • Classes that are applied toward general education or major degree requirements cannot be applied toward the minor (except for the mathematical sciences minor)
  • At least 9 credits must be earned in upper-level classes numbered 300 or above (except for the mathematical sciences minor)
  • You cannot pursue a major and minor in the same area
  • You cannot earn more than one minor
  • At least half the credits earned within the minor must be upper level (unless otherwise specified) and must be earned through UMGC
  • No grade can be lower than C
