Students learn in different ways and at different speeds. The field of adaptive learning has the potential to address each student's unique preferences, needs, and capabilities. Adaptive learning technologies range from intelligent use of learning management systems to sophisticated stand-alone tools that can be integrated into course learning environments. Adaptive technologies, which are in the early development stage, are expected to grow in importance.

Adaptive Learning Project Revamps Three UMGC Courses

Scope: UMGC has established itself as a leader in adaptive learning by piloting the Open Learning Initiative. The project, funded by a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, supports UMGC's work with the Carnegie Mellon University OLI to redesign the following three UMGC courses:

  • BIOL 103
  • IFSM 201
  • STAT 230
UMGC partnered with both OLI and Prince George's Community College in the course redesign. The courses will be used by UMGC and community colleges, but the materials are openly available through the OLI program.

Course redesigns and evaluations are still underway, but early evidence confirms the importance of adaptive learning initiatives. UMGC is working to get more vendor support and buy-in for adaptive learning technologies.

The center will be working with collaborators to identify additional pilots using new tools and different content than in the previous OLI projects.
