Gathering, sorting through, and presenting relevant information are critical skills across all disciplines. With advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the launches of ChatGPT and other Large Language Model (LLM) tools, foundational researching and sourcing skills are becoming increasingly important.
While research methods vary from subject to subject, students beginning to learn the fundamentals of academic research can benefit from some of the same basic approaches, including getting help from experts.
What Are the Recommended Research Steps You Should Follow?
The library department at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) has recommended the following steps to help students succeed in their academic research:
- Students should begin by thoroughly reviewing all assignment instructions to ensure that they know what they are being asked to do and when their assignment is due. If any aspect of the assignment instructions is unclear, students should contact their instructor for clarification.
- If students are given the opportunity to choose their own research topic, it's often a good idea for them to ask their instructor for feedback about their proposed topic in order to ensure that it will be acceptable.
- Once an approved research topic is chosen, students should conduct background research on the topic. Helpful research information can include learning some of the key authors, terms, and/or theories that are relevant to the topic, as well as any controversies associated with or any gaps in research about the topic.
- Based on their background reading, students should come up with a thesis that they'll try to support or a question that they'll try to answer in their paper.
- Students should use their library’s databases (such as the UMGC Library's databases) to find scholarly journal articles and other documents that they can use as sources for their paper that support or refute their thesis. Librarians can help students find useful resources if needed. Students should carefully review their search results to determine the usefulness and credibility of what they've found.
- Once students have gathered research from multiple sources, they should create an outline to help organize their thoughts and ensure that their paper will flow smoothly.
- After performing the preliminary academic research, students can then create a first draft of their research paper, following the format and citation requirements noted in the assignment instructions. Once they have created their first draft, they can identify gaps in their research and find more credible sources to support their thesis.
“At UMGC, students can submit their outline, partial draft, or complete first draft to the Effective Writing Center for review and feedback if desired, and any feedback should be taken into consideration when the final draft is written,” says Cynthia Thomes, business reference librarian at UMGC. “The UMGC Library and Effective Writing Center both have extensive resources that can help students with each step of the research process, and we encourage students to contact us for assistance.”
How Do You Get Started If You’ve Never Performed Academic Research Before?
Students who are just starting their academic research can take advantage of services that are provided by their chosen educational institution, which is usually offered by the library department.
Working with experts in the field, such as librarians, can get you on the right track in the beginning of your research, or they can be a helpful refresher for those who have performed academic research in the past.
What Are the Best Practices in Ethics and Utilizing AI in Academic Research?
As you perform research and draft your thesis, it is important to keep in mind the ethics surrounding your research. As you learn and reference credible sources, one of the most important things to keep in mind is how you properly credit your sources.
“Crediting your sources involves more than just using the right citation format when quoting from or paraphrasing another work,” says Thomes. “It involves knowing when and why to acknowledge the influence that someone else's work had on your own thinking.”
One of the more notable ethics questions is if students can use AI in their academic research. Students should consult their instructor on the use of AI in their research as well as any guides provided by their educational institution. When using AI for research, be sure to double check any sources provided, as AI sources are not always reliable.
At UMGC, students can reference the AI guide provided by the Library, which provides information about AI, links to some of the more popular AI tools, tips for creating effective prompts for AI tools, information about how to cite content created by AI tools, a note of caution about AI "hallucinations," and more.
Some of the UMGC library’s resources even include an AI tool. OneSearch Research Assistant is available for the OneSearch tool that’s featured on the library’s home page, for instance. If users use OneSearch to enter a topic, the Research Assistant will search library databases for the most relevant sources, write a topic overview based on what it found, provide links to the sources that were used for creating the overview, and suggest related research questions that could be used for conducting additional research.
How Do You Incorporate Research into Your Writing?
Incorporating your research into your writing typically takes one of three means: summary, paraphrase, or direct quote.
“The key to successful integration is in maintaining your own authorial voice, letting your goals and decisions determine the overall shape of your writing rather than ceding that authority to the work of other writers you've researched,” says Dan Gallagher, director of the Effective Writing Center at UMGC. “That can be a challenge, but the writing center is here to help you develop the necessary skills.”
Students at UMGC can learn more about these techniques on the Effective Writing Center's writing resource page under "Integrating research," as well in the academic integrity tutorial. Students can also submit their work to the writing center or schedule an online meeting with a tutor through the “Tutoring” link in their classroom, under the “Academic Support” or “Resources” tab.
How Does Academic Research Differ Between Undergraduate and Graduate Courses?
Students who are transitioning from undergraduate to graduate research should understand the difference and academic expectations and how it applies to their chosen field.
“Research varies between different academic subjects,” says Thomes. “History classes might ask students to find and analyze primary sources, like diaries and newspaper articles written at the time that a particular event occurred. Psychology classes might ask students to find and evaluate an empirical research article. Marketing classes might ask students to find information about the expected market for a particular product or service.”
Undergraduate assignments are generally straightforward. For example, an undergraduate business class assignment might ask students to find out who the leaders are at a certain company and what employees think of the leadership at the company. To do that, students need to be able to conduct basic research, such as finding a current company organization chart, and newspaper and journal articles that discuss labor relations at the company.
Graduate-level assignments generally go beyond this and ask students to apply what they've read about. A graduate business class assignment might ask students to consider what they've read about various management theories to explain which theories are being used at a particular company. For students to be able to do that, they need to look for documents that discuss the work environment at a company and think about how what they've read is relevant to the company, which requires students to be able to think critically and creatively.
“All of these different types of research will require different search strategies, which is where librarians can help, as we're familiar with which resources will work best for students' research depending on what they're trying to find,” says Thomes. “We're always happy to recommend databases and other resources or to suggest search techniques and other useful information.”
How Does UMGC Support Students in Their Academic Research?
UMGC offers a variety of resources to help support students in their academic research. The UMGC Library subscribes to over 100 different databases that students can use to find various types of documents including scholarly journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles, dissertations, reports, company and industry financial data, videos, and more. There are also more than 60 subject guides that list various recommended databases and websites, as well as guides that were created to help students with specific classes or assignments.
Students can access videos and web pages that explain how to cite sources according to various citation styles, including APA, MLA, and Chicago. Librarians also offer periodic webinars on topics ranging from how to construct effective searches to how to cite sources per APA to how to efficiently conduct business research. Librarians are available to answer students' questions 24/7 via chat, and they're also available during certain days and times to answer questions by email or phone or to meet with students by Zoom appointment.
The Effective Writing Center's Online Guide to Writing and Research is a comprehensive guide that contains tips that will help students improve their writing. The writing center also has a library of two-minute videos that cover various writing-related topics. Tutors can provide feedback about papers within 12 hours, and tutors are also available to work with students online by appointment. Students can access tutoring services via the Academic Support (or Resources) tab in the classroom, then select “tutoring”.
“Librarians and writing center advisors are happy to work with students in order to help them succeed with their research, and we encourage students to contact us for assistance at any time!” says Thomes.
Students can be successful in their academic work by following recommended practices to guarantee that the information you provide is both accurate and ethically compiled. With the support of credible sources and advice by experts such as librarians, students can provide thoughtful and expansive research in their field.
