Do you have a bachelor's degree in a subject area related to the teaching certification you are seeking? If so, skip this step. If not, here are our recommended bachelor's degree options.
Tip: If you take EDTP 500 and EDTP 535 as undergraduate electives at UMGC, you could be eligible to waive 12 credits from the Master of Arts in Teaching.
- Biology (7–12): Bachelor's degree in general studies with biology concentration (available at UMGC through this Pathway Program only)
- Chemistry (7–12): Bachelor's degree in chemistry (not available at UMGC)
- Computer Science (7–12): Bachelor's degree in computer science (available at UMGC)
- Earth and Space Science (7–12): Bachelor's degree in general studies with Earth and space science concentration (available at UMGC through this Pathway Program only)
- ESOL (Pre-K–12): Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (available at UMGC)
- Mathematics (7–12): Bachelor's degree in general studies with mathematics concentration (available at UMGC through this Pathway Program only)
- Physics (7–12): Bachelor's degree in physics (not available at UMGC)
- World Languages: French and Spanish (Pre-K–12): Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and qualifying scores on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Written Proficiency Test (WPT) (bachelor's degrees available at UMGC)
Earn a Master of Arts in Teaching at UMGC to prepare for certification in the following subject areas:

Earn a Master of Arts in TESOL at UMBC to prepare for ESOL (Pre-K–12) teaching certification.
AAQEP Accreditation (MAT & MEd)
University of Maryland Global Campus is a member in good standing of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), a national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Education in Instructional Technology have been awarded full accreditation by AAQEP through June 30, 2029. Full accreditation acknowledges that a program prepares effective educators who continue to grow as professionals and has demonstrated the commitment and capacity to maintain quality.
Get Started & Register
Apply for admission to UMGC: Complete the online application for admission. It typically takes about 10 minutes. Be sure to select your employer or organization on the application form.
Enroll in the pathway program: Complete the following forms and email copies to cls@umgc.edu. (The FERPA Release and MCPS Consent forms need to be completed only once. Please complete the MCPS Student Authorization form each term prior to enrollment.)

Earn credit for your education and eligible experience: Submit your official transcripts from any previous institutions of higher education.
Register for classes: Once you're admitted to UMGC, you will receive a student ID (EmplID) so you can register for courses online. Check the schedule of classes to view courses, and then register for classes online using the MyUMGC Student Portal.
