Networking is the process of engaging with industry professionals to create unique connections to explore, ask questions to gather information, and be a part of conversations related to the career fields we would like to pursue. Many individuals find that networking assists in deciding if a role or organization could potentially be a good fit for them to pursue. Others find that it allows them to determine if an organization is hiring or identify individuals who could serve as a referral within a company. By creating new connections through networking, you gain important industry insight to help you move closer towards your career goals.
Who to Consider
Networking can happen, anywhere, at any time, and with anyone. A great place to start is by identifying those within your existing support system who you may want to speak further with or reengage with.
Consider reaching out to:
- UMGC Faculty & Staff Members
- UMGC Alumni & Fellow classmates
- Colleagues or volunteers who you are already working with
- Teammates or club members
- Fellow military or military veterans
You may also consider networking with:
- Those working or conducting research in the field you are interested in joining.
- Recruiters within an organization.
- Customers or clients you are assisting in your current role.
Prior to engaging with someone it may be helpful to prepare a list of questions that you can pull from to keep the conversation moving forward. When reaching out to someone, be sure to:
- When possible, research the individual you hope to speak with before connecting.
- Keep conversation professional.
- Have a goal in mind regarding what information you are looking to gain.
- Know what your long-term goal career goal is.
- Be flexible with your schedule.
- Follow up with a thank you and token of gratitude.
