When Ali Alnaqeeb ’20 decided to pursue a new challenge, he turned to UMGC’s Career Services team for support.
Alnaqeeb, who earned his Master of Science in Software Engineering from UMGC in 2020, currently works as a lead quality assurance engineer and is looking to advance to a management position.
“I learned about the VMock resume tool from my Career Services advisor,” he explains.
VMock’s resume review tool is part of Career Services’ CareerQuest suite of tools and resources for students and alumni.
“We’ve assembled a variety of offerings designed to support our students and alumni as they pursue their career goals,” says UMGC Assistant Vice President for Career Development Francine Blume. “Whether you’re entering the workforce for the first time, changing careers or have your eye on an executive role, we’ve got something for everyone.”
Leveraging VMock for a stronger resume
The VMock resume review tool is a virtual platform that leverages machine learning, data science and natural language processing to provide feedback on a resume. Regardless of what industry you work in, VMock will review your resume and make suggestions based on best practices from employers around the world.
To get started, create an account. Then, VMock will do the rest, including:
• Share resume guidelines to ensure that you include all of the necessary and relevant information in your resume that hiring managers need to see when evaluating candidates
• Evaluate how effectively you have highlighted your skills, expertise, education, experience, achievements and community involvement
• Provide you with line-by-line suggestions to improve your resume, including suggesting about keywords hiring managers look for, industry jargon that speaks to expertise and how to enhance readability, among other areas
• Score your resume and compare it to benchmark rankings so you can see how well it holds up to the competition
Once Alnaqeeb uploaded his resume to VMock, he found the process simple. “It was pretty straight forward and easy to use,” he says.
After he received detailed feedback, he was able to edit his resume based on VMock’s recommendations, upload it again and see if his revisions increased his resume score. This process helped him refine his resume to increase his chances of landing an interview for the quality assurance management position he desires.
In the end, Alnaqeeb is happy he took advantage of Career Services’ tools and resources to help him advance in his career.
“I think this tool is a great step in creating a good resume,” he says. “It’s definitely worth trying, and—most importantly—it’s free.”
