Baltimore Mayor, Booz Allen Executive To Keynote UMGC Commencement Ceremonies May 11

ADELPHI, Md. (May 6, 2013)—University of Maryland University College celebrates its 2013 stateside commencement with two ceremonies (9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) at the Comcast Center in College Park on May 11. Of the 8,077 graduates in the Class of 2013, about 3,200 will attend the two ceremonies.

  • Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will deliver the commencement address and will receive an honorary degree at the 4 p.m. ceremony.
  • Mark Gerencser, executive vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton and chair of the UMGC Board of Visitors, will give the commencement address at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony.

Facts about the UMGC stateside commencement:

  • Oldest graduate: Douglas C. Kruse will earn a B.S. in Environmental Management at age 77.
  • 473 will graduate with Honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude).
  • Graduates represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 17 countries.
  • 632 graduates from cyber-related degree programs.

UMGC enrolls more than 90,000 students around the world, including more than 50,000 students who are active duty military personnel and their families overseas. In addition to the two stateside ceremonies on May 11, the University conducts official commencement ceremonies in Okinawa (April 20) and Tokyo (April 27), Japan, Seoul, Korea (April 27), Heidelberg, Germany (May 4), Guam (May 18), Sigonella (June 12) and Naples (June 14), Italy.

 

Media note: Since 85% of UMGC students earn their degrees fully online, UMGC hosts a new graduate reception on Friday evening, May 10. The event is an opportunity for graduates to meet—in person—their fellow students and faculty, often for the first time.
