Jiffy Lube International ranked first in Training Magazine's 2014 Training Top 125, thanks in part to its partnership with University of Maryland University College (UMUC).
Under the agreement, Jiffy Lube service center employees can transfer Jiffy Lube University credits to UMUC to earn an undergraduate certificate in management foundations. At UMUC's recommendation, Jiffy Lube had the American Council on Education (ACE) review its training program to provide a pathway to an undergraduate certificate and eventually a degree.
Jiffy Lube received seven credit recommendations from ACE and partnered with UMUC to create the pathway to the management foundations certificate, which requires three courses in management, marketing and team building. UMUC's Corporate Learning Solutions team also worked with Jiffy Lube corporate staff to customize the case studies for the courses around the performance needs of Jiffy Lube store managers.
In a pilot program completed in 2013, 11 store managers and Jiffy Lube International staff members earned certificates.
UMUC is currently in discussions with one of Jiffy Lube's prominent franchise holders to create a similar pathway. This program would develop an internal leadership pipeline to meet the growth and customer service goals of the business. This solution, beginning with the development of a competency framework, will holistically incorporate Jiffy Lube International's training with UMUC education and also include a dedicated Jiffy Lube advisor from UMUC.
"Training is one of the cornerstones of success for Jiffy Lube International," said the company's president, Steve Ledbetter, to Training Magazine's Lorri Freifeld. "Jiffy Lube will continue to make training a top priority to further drive excellence."
In the face of growing competition in the quick lube/light maintenance segment of the market, Jiffy Lube continues to grow every year, and cites "operational excellence" as the key driver of the two-year rigorous training program developed and delivered by Jiffy Lube University to its 20,000 employees across more than 2,000 stores.
