UMGC Global Media Center A Message from UMGC Interim President Lawrence E. Leak, Ph.D.

September 28, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

I am truly honored to be invited to serve as interim president of University of Maryland Global Campus. As some of you know, I previously served as the university’s chief academic officer, and I have a deep appreciation and respect for its mission and for the many hardworking and talented individuals who comprise its faculty and staff.

Above all, I am sincerely grateful to President Javier Miyares for his leadership and thoughtful guidance. He will be deeply missed, and I know I speak for all of you when I say that I wish him all the best in his new role.

I am equally grateful to USM Chancellor Jay Perman and the Board of Regents for their confidence and support as we negotiate this transitional period together.

As I reflect on the challenges and opportunities ahead, I am excited to once again join a global community that is so devoted to the needs of adult students and so focused on providing them with both an exceptional educational experience and outstanding support. As the search for a new president continues, I look forward to working with each of you to prepare the university for a smooth transition and position it to continue the momentum established by President Miyares and key leaders across the institution.

Rest assured that I am committed to maintaining our focus on keeping our global work environment safe and fully functional during the current global health crisis, and I thank each of you for the part you play in maintaining our operational integrity.

I am committed, as well, to maintaining a transparent and collaborative style of leadership, and I look forward to working together and getting to know each of you better in the months ahead.

Thank you again for the role you play at University of Maryland Global Campus. It is a true honor to rejoin this remarkable community.

Sincerely,

Lawrence E. Leak, PhD Interim President University of Maryland Global Campus
