University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) was ranked #1 among educational organizations in the Military Times’ 2022 “Best for Vets: Employers” list. It’s the second consecutive year UMGC finished first among educational institutions.
The annual survey, which included submissions from 230 companies, non-profits and educational organizations, is the most comprehensive annual ranking of organizations with military-connected employment programs, benefits and support efforts.
The survey captures the areas of greatest importance to transitioning service members, veterans, and their families when looking for an employer. Recruitment and employment practices, as well as retention and support programs, were given the most weight and importance in scoring and final rankings.
In addition to UMGC’s top ranking in the Education-Teaching- Administration category, the university was third among organizations ranked in the state of Maryland and #6 in the Non-profit category. UMGC jumped one spot in each category, compared to last year’s ranking.
“The recognition from a respected outlet like Military Times is a testament to our commitment to attracting, hiring and retaining veterans,” said UMGC President Gregory Fowler. “They bring qualities to the workforce that align with our institutional values, including a strong work ethic and team focus, as well as exceptional leadership skills that are developed early in their careers. And because of their backgrounds, they can relate to our students, more than half of whom are active-duty personnel, veterans and their families. We’ve seen them perform not only in service to our country but in the classroom. It is truly a win-win relationship, and we are focused and intentional about providing support in the workplace, including relationships with veteran service organizations, hiring initiatives for veterans with disabilities, health and wellness programs, and career development.”
In its 13th year, Military Times Best for Vets: Employers rankings are based on the results of a voluntary survey that covered the policies and practices that make companies an attractive place to work for current employees and future job seekers within the military community.
“Military Times continues to set the standard for employer rankings for transitioning service members and veterans. Although often imitated, there is no other list that comes close to Best for Vets: Employers,” says Mort Greenberg, SVP of media solutions at Military Times. “We stand by the rigor and soundness of this survey, which spotlights companies’ employment programs that help transitioning service members excel in their post-military careers.”
