Adelphi, Md. (July 19, 2023)—University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and eastern Nebraska’s Metropolitan Community College (MCC) have announced a new transfer agreement that enables more than 40,000 students—including non-degree students—to take advantage of one of UMGC’s more than 135 online academic programs at a more affordable rate.

“We are extremely proud to join with Metropolitan Community College and provide students with a seamless pathway toward a bachelor’s degree through a process that will ensure UMGC accepts as much credit and prior learning as possible,” said Blakely Pomietto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at UMGC. “Through these types of alliances, the university is committed to supporting community college transfer students around the country in reaching their educational goals as affordably and efficiently as possible.”

MCC has the largest enrollment among six community colleges in Nebraska and is the second largest postsecondary institution in the state. It was founded in 1974 as a public community college to serve Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties.

Under the agreement, each MCC student who completes an associate degree receives guaranteed admission into a UMGC bachelor’s degree program in a complementary field of study. The UMGC application fee is waived, there is a discount on tuition, and the student can automatically transfer 60—or more—credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Employees, spouses and dependents of Metropolitan Community College are also eligible for these benefits.

“Over the years, MCC has worked very hard to develop multiple transfer pathways for our students,” Tom McDonnell, vice president of Academic Affairs at MCC said. “Anytime we can offer students choices for transferring courses or degrees, we want to pursue those opportunities. This agreement with UMGC enhances the menu of options we can give students and provides them great flexibility in completing their degrees.”

UMGC has an enrollment of some 90,000 students, more than half of whom are active-duty military personnel and their families serving on military bases around the world. It offers award-winning online, in-person and hybrid programs in biotechnology, cybersecurity, data analytics, information technology and other career fields that are in high demand in today’s increasingly technical, global workplace. UMGC also offers cost savings through its use of digital resources that have replaced publisher textbooks in most courses.
