Adelphi, Md. (July 26, 2023)—University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) MBA student Edge Vutto Kaunda has been awarded a scholarship through the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Foundation. Kaunda was named an AICPA Legacy Scholarship recipient because of his commitment to advancing his accounting skills as an outstanding minority student.

“This scholarship will help support my long-term goal of starting my own accounting firm,” Kaunda said. “One of the issues with running a business is you need to know all the aspects of how to do it. This led me to decide to pursue an MBA and gain leadership, marketing and customer relationship skills.”

In the past, Kaunda has completed additional studies from UMGC related to accounting and finance.

Kaunda was born in Malawi and moved to the United States in 2010 as part of a green card lottery. He enrolled in UMGC because his professional accounting certification from Africa was not recognized by most employers in the United States. He currently works a daytime full-time job while he studies for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, which is a four-section, 16-hour assessment. His plan is to complete the exam in one year while also finishing his MBA studies.

“Thanks to UMGC, some doors have opened up for me like the scholarship,” Kaunda said. “I’ve also made great connections and exposure through UMGC’s Career Services.”

The AICPA Foundation was established to advance the science of accountancy and accounting education. The scholarship program advances the foundation’s commitment to the next generation of CPAs. AICPA is a greater part of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, the global voice of the accounting and finance profession, founded by AICPA and The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
