Adelphi, Md. (April 5, 2024)--University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) will celebrate graduates at commencement ceremonies across several time zones around the world, beginning in Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa) and moving to Korea, Germany and Micronesia (Guam). The university’s largest graduation event, "Grad Walk," will be held in Adelphi, Maryland, from May 9-12.

More than 14,000 students have earned degrees this year, including associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, with thousands attending the global commencements. U.S. graduation activities will take place at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Maryland, highlighted by “Grad Walk,” a four-day event that enables graduates to select a specific block of time to walk across the stage with their family and friends close by.

The spring commencement in Germany coincides with UMGC’s 75th anniversary of service to the U.S. military in Europe. In response to a call from the Department of Defense, the university sent seven faculty members in 1949 to teach U.S. troops in post-World War II Germany. UMGC has been teaching, uninterrupted, on U.S. military installations throughout Europe ever since, expanding to Asia in 1956 and the Middle East in 2005. The first formal commencement ceremony in Europe was held in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1954.

UMGC has taught classes on every continent, including Antarctica, and in the war zones of Vietnam, Bosnia, and Afghanistan. The university is currently offering classes in Poland to U.S. troops supporting NATO in Poland.
