Adelphi, Md. (Aug. 15, 2024)— The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) School of Business will launch a redesigned Master of Business Administration (MBA) program this fall. The new program is more flexible, allowing students to tailor it to their areas of interest, and can be completed in as little as 16 months for about $21,000.

“Given the emerging focus on business analytics, entrepreneurship and innovation, this is the right time to redesign the program by incorporating those topics,” said Mohamed Ezz, acting portfolio director of the MBA program. “The MBA program was designed and built by identifying the skills that are most in demand by employers and developing courses that will allow students to grow those skills.”

The revamped program focuses on application over theory. Students will be able to choose among five specializations: finance, human resources management, marketing, global business and nonprofit management. Students can also choose a general management option and mix and match courses from these areas to best suit their career goals. Through elective courses in these areas, students will gain more targeted expertise, giving them a leg up in a competitive job market.

Unlike most MBA programs, students can transfer credits from other institutions into UMGC’s program.

“The MBA will move to a three-term academic calendar and offer six start dates per year,” explained Pam Carter, PhD, portfolio vice president and dean of the School of Business. “All courses will be eight weeks in length and have been designed to increase the time students spend on developing their desired skillset.”

Another feature of the MBA program redesign is an integrated Preflight Tool, a personalized study blueprint, with results from a self-assessment tool that students will use at the beginning of each MBA core course. The tool generates a custom plan linked to a library of resources that students can use to fill in any gaps and support their learning. The Preflight program was included in updates implemented during the last academic year.

UMGC’s MBA program was the first U.S.-based MBA developed specifically for online delivery. The redesigned program allows students in the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area the added option of choosing a hybrid program that includes both online and in-person classes. The program is backed by the University System of Maryland and approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The International Accreditation Council for Business Education has accredited the program for more than 20 years.

“Also new this fall, students who complete a master’s in cybersecurity management policy, cybersecurity technology or data analytics can complete an additional six courses plus a capstone course and earn an MBA,” added Ravi Mittal, PhD, Chair of UMGC’s Department of Business Administration.
