Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 18, 2025)--Calvin Nobles, PhD, portfolio vice president and dean of the School of Cybersecurity and Information Technology at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), has been appointed chair of the Cybersecurity Technical Group at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES).
The Cybersecurity Technical Group fosters collaboration among researchers, practitioners and industry leaders to address human interactions in cyber defense, from end-user behavior to decision-making in high-stakes environments.
“I am focused on expanding interdisciplinary research, strengthening industry engagement and advocating for human-centered cybersecurity policies and system design,” said Nobles. “Through increased membership and strategic partnerships with universities, government agencies and other nonprofits, we hope to demonstrate that we can solve these growing industry challenges.”
As group chair, Nobles will lead efforts to advance human factors in cybersecurity through interdisciplinary work and through discussions on automation, human-machine teaming and socio-technical resilience. At UMGC, Nobles, a retired U.S. Navy officer, brings more than two decades of professional cybersecurity, military and academic leadership experience to his role with the School of Cybersecurity and Information Technology.
Nobles wants to equip organizations with insights that will mitigate cyber risks and drive the Cybersecurity Technical Group’s mission forward, enhancing its impact in the cybersecurity community.
The mission of the Cybersecurity Technical Group is to promote work addressing human factors and human-computer interaction in cybersecurity. The group engages professionals interested in this area, organizes sessions and fosters community building.
