University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), a national leader in offering workforce relevant online academic programs, and Elgin Community College (ECC), a two-year institution frequently recognized by The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, have announced a new transfer agreement.
“We are pleased to join with Elgin Community College and provide students with a seamless pathway toward a bachelor’s degree through a process that will ensure UMGC accepts as much credit and prior learning as possible,” said Blakely Pomietto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at UMGC. “Through these types of alliances, the university is committed to supporting community college transfer students around the country in reaching their educational goals as affordably and efficiently as possible.”
Founded in 1949, ECC is a fully accredited public community college, which serves approximately 16,000 students each year. The U.S. Department of Education has designated ECC a Hispanic-Serving Institution since 2009, and the community college is also a military-friendly school. ECC serves residents in five counties of Illinois, including Kane County and parts of Cook, DeKalb, DuPage and McHenry.
ECC students who complete their associate degree can now transfer a minimum of 60 credits when they enroll in UMGC bachelor’s degree programs in complementary fields of study. The new partnership promises ECC graduates guaranteed admission to UMGC, waives UMGC’s application fee and discounts tuition by 25 percent. The terms of the partnership also cover employees, spouses and dependents of ECC.
"This new transfer agreement with the University of Maryland Global Campus exemplifies our commitment to creating seamless pathways for our students to achieve their educational and career goals," said Peggy Heinrich, EdD, president of Elgin Community College. "By partnering with UMGC, we are expanding opportunities for our graduates to continue their studies in a flexible, high-quality environment that supports their aspirations and success."
