Online Guide to Writing and Research The Research Process

Print Resources

University and college libraries tend to have more recent and detailed materials, some of which are print resources. Libraries provide services that allow you to browse their holdings and those of other libraries, as well as to order, locate, and hold books or journal articles until you pick them up.  Libraries can also request materials for you from a different library (this is called an interlibrary loan) and once the item is found and sent to your library, you are then able to use an item from another library without having to go there yourself.

University libraries are also more likely to carry the academic and scholarly books and journals needed in academic research.  In particular, the reference sections of university libraries help you narrow your topic and locate the appropriate sources for review while you plan your research project. In most libraries, a reference librarian will help you find bibliographies, subject indexes, abstracts, and other research tools.  Look here for more information about how to obtain print materials from the UMGC library: UMGC Book Borrowing and Delivery
